Technology leadership requires a unique combination of Technology knowledge and leadership skills. Technology leaders must be able to balance the technology requirements of their work with the people and management skills required to lead their teams effectively.
Over the years working with 100s of technology leaders, I’ve seen different types of Technology leaders, each with their own unique role and responsibilities within an organization. Here are some examples:
- Chief Technology Officer (CTO): The CTO is responsible for the overall technology strategy of an organization. They must have a deep understanding of the Technology aspects of the organization’s products or services, as well as the broader technology landscape. The CTO must be able to lead Technology teams and make strategic decisions that drive the organization’s success.
- Engineering Manager: The Engineering Manager is responsible for managing a team of engineers and ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within budget. They must have a strong understanding of the Technology aspects of their field and be able to communicate effectively with both Technology and non-Technology stakeholders.
- Technology Project Manager: A Technology project manager is responsible for planning and executing Technology projects, coordinating with Technology teams, and ensuring that the project is delivered on time and within budget.
